PHARM Podcast 31 : ED chronic pain management

Seth and I do a quick overview of the challenges of managing chronic pain presentations in the EDHi there. A week ago, we read a tweet about the challenges of managing chronic pain presentations to the ED. I thought it was worthwhile having a discussion of the options in dealing with such presentations.
What we discuss:

  1. Harm minimisation strategy with limited prescribing
  2. Alternatives to opioids
  3. General approach to pain in the ED
  4. Systems in Australia and US to monitor drug addiction and seeking prescription drugs for illicit sale
  5. The repeat presenter

    Very much enjoyed the podcast.

    One correction: norco is a hydrocodone preparation, not oxycodone. And it has 325 mg of acetaminophen, not 500. The three norco doses are 5/325, 7.5/325, 10/325.

      whoops, sorry for the mixup. haven’t given it since gen surg rotation back in MS3/ summer 2006. my mistake!
