So what does SMACC (Social Media And Critical Care) have to do with Bruce Lee? A lot I would argue!
Bruce Lee, one of my all time heroes, is a legend in martial arts world and Hollywood. What he is not so well known for is his enthusiasm for philosophy ( he actually completed a degree in philosophy). His life work and teaching was based around a key belief that self expression and being true to ones self identity and journey was fundamental to human existence. He expressed this through martial arts and achieved what many regard to be the pinnacle in that field. He also strongly believed that martial arts should be individualised , not stylised into systems which he saw as false and divisive. He believed that everyone had to go on their own journey of self learning and discovery to be the best they could be. He was a true non conformist and revolutionary of his period in history. He married a Caucasian American woman, blended western and eastern fighting styles and developed his own recognised martial art style , Jeet Kune Do.

I see many parallels in how SMACC and FOAMEd were borne and have grown. We have broken away from traditional styles of medical conference. The concept of unique expression for each presenter is strongly supported. SMACC is about inspiration, it is about guiding people to follow their own paths of learning, rather than following dogma

So come and be inspired at SMACC. We all need a bit of inspiration from time to time.
